At Regina Coeli we aim to stimulate children’s interest in their surroundings.

Through creative questioning we foster a sense of wonder and beauty about their world as well as help them to develop an interest in their environment and its future. The teaching of Geography enhances their sense of responsibility for care of the earth and its peoples.


  • Acquire knowledge about locations and places that will help them to set local, national and international events within a geographical context.
  • Understand some of the important features of the earth such as landforms, weather and climate, hydrological and ecological systems.
  • Begin to develop an understanding of the significance of location and looking at the distribution patterns in human activities (e.g. housing patterns, regeneration of local areas). Location also involves how places are linked by movements of people.  Children experience these aspects and begin to understand the interdependence of people through investigation of their own and contrasting places, (e.g. social activities).
  • Understand some of the relationships between people and environments both how the environment affects people and how we affect the environment, (e.g. improvements to school grounds).
  • Develop a sense of place, a feeling for the “personality” of a place and what it might be like to live there.
  • Develop an awareness, appreciation and sensitivity to ethnic, cultural and economic diversity.
  • Acquire and develop skills necessary for geographical enquiry and be able to communicate them (e.g. the making and interpretation of maps).
