Key Stage 1
The children in Key stage 1 have the opportunity to discover all aspects of learning and gain new experiences through an exciting and engaging creative curriculum.
As teachers, we aim to inspire children in their writing by giving them opportunities to learn through a variety of ways. This approach to teaching means learning about historical figures; major events that have happened in the past; poetry; traditional tales and factual reports. To further enrich their learning we visit places such as Hever castle, Eastbourne and Oaks Park and we have visitors into the school to talk to the children about a range of subjects.
Each classroom has a reading corner where children can choose a wide selection of books to enjoy in class or at home. Our Book Week inspires the children to learn about new authors, dress up as their favourite book character and take part in competitions.
In line with the new curriculum we use concrete apparatus to deepen the children’s understanding of mathematical operations and methods. The children receive weekly homework to support their learning at home. We have an annual maths week where children participate in fun maths activities across key stages.
Parents workshops/curriculum meetings
These are run throughout the year to advise and inform parents so that they feel confident when supporting their child at home. The maths and English workshops are practical and interactive and presented in a way that is both fun and informative.
We use the scheme Come and See to help develop the children’s knowledge of Catholic and other faiths. The children take part in regular liturgies and Masses, where they are involved in writing their own prayers, singing songs and telling the gospel in various ways through acting, song and readings. The RE curriculum is taught in a creative way and children also have the chance to experience other faiths such as Judaism, Sikhism and Islam. Visits to Churches, Mosques and Cathedrals also help children with their understanding of different faiths.
In other areas, the children take part in musical performances in and out of school and experience various sports including netball, football, rugby and cross country.
